Universitas Indonesia (UI) is still the best in Indonesia according to the 2024 SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) after occupying 1st position in Indonesia for three years. UI experienced an increase in world ranking from 629 to 457 this year based on an assessment of three indicators: research performance, innovation output, and social impact.

For the entire sector, the UI research indicator is in 1st position in Indonesia, 4th in Asia, and 8th in the world. In contrast, the UI societal indicator is in 1st position in Indonesia, 1st in Asia, and 4th in the world. For the higher education sector, the UI research indicator is in 1st position in Indonesia, 5th in Asia, and 8th in the world. In contrast, the UI societal indicator is in 1st position in Indonesia, 2nd in Asia, and 5th in the world.

UI Chancellor, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D, expressed his pride in the achievements of all UI academics who have contributed to UI being at the top in Indonesia, according to SIR 2024. “After three consecutive years occupying 1st position, UI is again in 1st position in Indonesia this year. UI’s ranking has also risen significantly at the global level. This is certainly something we are proud of. In the future, hopefully, UI can improve research performance, produce superior innovation, and have a broad social impact,” said Prof. Ari.

SIR divides the institution’s scientific output into 19 subject areas. “UI’s output was successfully included in 18 subject areas, with 9 of them occupying 1st position in Indonesia. The nine subject areas are Arts and Humanities, Business, Management and Accounting, Medicine; Social Sciences, Economics, Econometrics and Finance, Engineering, Physics and Astronomy, and Psychology,” said Amelita Lusia CPR, Head of the Public Relations and KIP UI Bureau.

Of all these subject areas, UI has four subject areas which are ranked based on narrow subject areas, namely Medicine, Social Sciences, Engineering, and Agricultural and Biological Sciences. There are ten categories in four subject areas, and they also occupy position 1 in Indonesia. The ten categories are Architecture; Building and Construction; Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine; Critical Care and Intensive Care Medicine; Gastroenterology; Ophthalmology; Pediatrics, Perinatology and Child Health; Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Imaging; Anthropology; and Communication.

SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) is a classification of academic and research-related institutions ranked based on three different indicators. SIR aims to provide useful metrics tools for institutions, policymakers, and research managers to analyze, evaluate, and improve an institution’s activities, outcomes, and innovation results. Apart from universities, SIR also organizes rankings for four other sectors: Government, Health, Companies, and Non-Profit.
