Universitas Indonesia (UI) made achievements in the world’s most prestigious programming contest, the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) 2023 World Finals held on April 14-19, 2024 in Luxor, Egypt. UI represented by the Stack.py and Bingung Weh teams ranked 26th and 36th out of 170 top universities in the world. This year, the ICPC World Finals was attended by 840 contestants from 50 countries.

ICPC World Finals is the final stage of the ICPC competition series. The finalists are teams ranked in the top two percent of the ICPC at the regional level which was attended by 3406 universities from 104 countries. Previously, UI won the Asia Jakarta Regional ICPC in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, ICPC held two World Finals competitions, the 46th and 47th, as the pandemic postponed the World Finals a few years ago.

The two teams competing in the ICPC 2023 World Finals consist of students from the Faculty of Computer Science (Fasilkom). The Stack.py team consists of Pikatan Arya Bramajati, Fausta Anugrah Dianparama, and Hocky Yudhiono. The Bingung Weh team consisted of Steven Novaryo, Ahmad Haulian Yoga Pratama, and Budiman Arbenta.

Denny, S.Kom., M.I.T., Ph.D, supervisor and lecturer of Fasilkom UI said UI successfully solved five problems out of 11 trials given at the 47th ICPC World Finals 2023. While at the 46th ICPC World Finals 2023, UI managed to solve six out of 11 problems and occupied the 26th joint rank.

“This position makes UI ranked the highest in Southeast Asia with Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The number of problems solved is also the same as Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology (KAIST) and Stanford University,” Denny said.

Furthermore, he added that the ICPC UI team is supported by Huawei International. Huawei’s contribution is very meaningful in improving the UI team’s competitive programming skills.

The Dean of Fasilkom UI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Petrus Mursanto, M.Sc., appreciated the students’ achievements and hard work. He said, “Congratulations to the UI team for their achievement in the 2023 ICPC World Finals Luxor. This is certainly inseparable from the full support of the academic community of Fasilkom UI. This real contribution proves that UI is a center of excellence for the development of Information Communication Technology (ICT) with competitive human resources, not only at the national level but also at the international level.”

ICPC World Finals is the oldest programming contest in the world that has been held since 1977. Previously, the UI team won the High Honors title at the 44th ICPC World Finals in Moscow in 2021. At that time, UI successfully secured the 32nd position in the world, successfully surpassing Stanford University in 51st place.
