Two delegation teams of UI successfully received three awards at World University Debating Championship (WUDC) 2016 in Greece.

UI delegation who are English Debating Society (EDS) student activity unit member, participated in English as Second Language (ESL) category. Magreta Kailla Adenta and Terry Muthahhari, one of UI representative group, successfully entered the final round and got award as Grand Finalists of World University Debating Championship.

Meanwhile the other delegation team, Revaldi Nathanael and Gabriel Charlotte entered the top 16 round and received awards as Top 16 of World University Debating Championship and Top 20 Best Speakers.

This year was the second time of EDS participation on ESL category final at WUDC. EDS UI is the only debate club from Indonesia that has ever got into Grand Finals WUDC ESL Category in respectively 2 years. This year, UI teams were coached by Roderick Sibarani.

On Open Category elimination round, ESL team and English as Foreign Language (EFL) team were matched by knockout system. In one debate session, two teams with highest rank entitled to continue on next round.

During pre-elemination and elimination round, UI teams competed against reputable universities, such as Leiden University, Melbourne University, Harvard University, SMU Singapore, etc.

The system was continuously done until top 4 team were chosen for final round. The team who got first place in those three round will be crowned as Worlds Champion Open Category, Worlds Champion ESL Category, and Worlds Champion EFL Category. The committee also gave special award for individuals with highest score during elimination round. Those awards are Worlds Best Speaker Open Category, Worlds Best Speaker ESL Category, and Worlds Best Speaker EFL Category.

World University Debating Championship (WUDC) is an international debate competition that is held annually since 1981. The competition is debate competition that using British Parliamentary format and has been participated by universities in 400 teams from all over the world.
