Rector of UI Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D. appreciated the UI GreenMetric ranking, that is initiated by UI and has gone popular globally as it is today. He said, “This year the teaching and learning process has been running extensively and started utilizing campus infrastructure like before. Various innovations have been made by adjusting new habits to make them cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable. The management of tertiary institutions to become centers for the realization of a green economy continues to be carried out. The impact of campus activities on the environment, social and economy of the community is pursued in many programs initiated by lecturers. Cooperation between universities in the world and in Indonesia can be seen from the enthusiasm to participate in this ranking and carry out transformations on their campuses.

Director General of Higher Education, Research and Technology, Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Prof. Ir. Nizam, M.Sc., DIC, Ph.D., IPU, ASEAN.Eng.

According to Prof. Nizam, the climate conditions in the world are uncertain. Therefore, an agreement was made by many countries to reduce carbon emissions as an effort to preserve the environment. This step starts with education in educational institutions to teach behavior and awareness of the importance of reducing waste, and saving water and energy use. “This is done to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are world goals. UI GreenMetric describes the efforts made by each tertiary institution in preserving the environment. This is so that our children and grandchildren can experience a good life in the future,” said Prof. Nizam.

Indonesia is making efforts to reduce land degradation, improve ocean health, and prevent the rate of deforestation and pollution. These collective steps are formulated using scientific evidence based on research data, in this case the result of collaboration between academics, researchers and research institutions. Ir. Laksmi stated that universities have a strategic role in efforts to realise SDGs in the medium to long term context. This is because higher education institutions produce a good quality human resources that produce innovations, including technological innovations, and have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and innovation results both on campus and in society.

Secretary of UI dr. Agustin Kusumayati, M.Sc., Ph.D. said that the focus at the university is not just education, research, and community service, but also a commitment to the sustainability of the earth. “This is a form of commitment that requires knowledge that is not trivial about the importance of preserving the earth so that we can sustain life. I believe that ladies and gentlemen who have committed to maintaining the sustainability of our campus environment, will definitely feel the impact of the effort. How can a good environment and facilities, as well as a pleasant green campus ultimately encourage the performance and innovation of academics,” said dr. Augustine.
