The UI Cares’s Cianjur disaster response action was initiated by 12 UI students who are members of the UI Nature Lover Student Activity Unit (Mapala) and the Geography Mountaineering Club (GMC) of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UI. In carrying out UI Cares activities, Mapala UI coordinates with related agencies, one of which is the Cianjur Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).

Apart from distributing logistics in the form of accommodation and consumption to the earthquake victims, UI students also supported BPBD activities in conducting isolated area assessments and mapping of affected areas so that assistance could be distributed on target to victims who needed it most. An assessment was also carried out on the condition of schools in the Cianjur area and the level of damage to get an idea of how education activities in the area could recover soon.

UI Cares is a form of UI community service (pengmas), both in the form of action and social assistance, which is distributed throughout the country. Amelita Lusia, Head of Public Relations and KIP UI Bureau, said that the UI Cares Team is under the coordination of the Directorate of Community Service and Community Empowerment (DPPM).

So far, UI Peduli has always moved quickly to areas that have experienced disasters, by cooperating with several parties/partners, starting from ILUNI UI, the local government, providing assistance to people who are victims. Amelita gave an example of one of UI Peduli’s activities in December 2021, namely when UI visited three locations in Lumajang Regency, East Java, in order to carry out community service activities in response to the eruption of Mount Semeru on December 4, 2021. At that time, UI Peduli brought 50 lamp packages flashlights as well as educational packages containing school bags, school stationery, bottle holders, socks, pencil cases, snacks, and milk boxes totaling 200 packages.

Previously, at the beginning of the year (2-4 March 2022) UI Peduli went to five flooded areas in Pekalongan, namely Wiradesa Village, Jatayu GOR, Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center Pekalongan, Pecakaran Village Head Office, and Pesanggrahan Village Head Office in Wonokerto District, bringing health-related aid, such as vitamins, propolis, and medical masks.

In the process of distributing the aid, the UI Cares team worked closely with the 0710 Military District Command (Kodim) in Pekalongan City. All aid is distributed directly to residents’ homes and public kitchens.
