Universitas Indonesia (UI) is ranked in the top 3 in Indonesia according to the QS Sustainability Ranking 2024. UI is also ranked =426 out of 1,403 universities in the world and ranked =89 out of 478 universities in Asia. The 2024 QS Sustainability Ranking is the second edition after previously being held in October 2022. UI was recorded as superior in Governance indicators, achieving global achievements which made it number 1 in Asia (score of 94), followed by Sungkyunkwan University with 93 and Seoul National University with 92.6.

This year, QS added Governance as the main indicator apart from two other indicators, namely Environmental Impact and Social Impact. The Governance indicators in the QS Sustainability Ranking assessment complement the Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) concept which is currently being developed in various university research related to corporate governance. The aim is to assess whether an institution has strong governance, for example through open decision making, a holistic ethical organizational culture, student representation on university governing bodies, and financial transparency. In the three indicators for the QS Sustainability Ranking 2024 assessment, UI experienced an increase in ranking for the Knowledge Exchange aspect in the Social Impact indicator.

UI Rector Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D, said that currently, education and research throughout the world have adopted the ESG concept as the main theme to create innovations that have an impact on society. ESG issues are becoming increasingly important in higher education as universities are key players in building a sustainable and equitable future.

“By achieving the highest direct position in Asia for Governance indicators, it shows that UI continues to be committed to strengthening University Governance with an ESG perspective. In this way, this will become a strong foundation in realizing a sustainable classroom campus in the future,” said Vishnu Juwono, Head of the UI Transformation, Risk Management and Evaluation Monitoring (TREM) Bureau.

Through the three assessment indicators set out in the QS Sustainability Ranking 2024, universities are increasingly aware of the importance of curricula on environmental sustainability, especially those related to carbon footprints, renewable energy, and recycling and waste reduction programs. Universities are also obliged to ensure fair access to education for all students, as well as ensuring good governance, in order for universities to be able to work openly and accountably, have good management systems, and comply with regulations that apply.
