Universitas Indonesia (UI) through the UI Teaching Movement (GUIM) visited three targeted points in West Java,Cimarga, Karangbungur, and Cibareubeu Elementary School. This is done as a form of concern for the sustainability of basic education in rural areas in Indonesia. A total of 60 students, 16 supervisors, and five committee members were involved in the UI Teaching Movement (GUIM) project this time.

The UI Teaching Movement, which this year celebrates 11 years of work, has a mission to increase enthusiasm for learning and pursue education for elementary school students. GUIM 11 carries out five activities, namely Self Education Class, Mari Nyeni Class, Rainbow House Library, Cheerful Healthy Body, and Folk Festival. The opening of GUIM 11 was attended by the Head of the Sumedang Regency Education Office Agus Wahidin, the Head of the Regional Research and Development Planning Agency (Bappppeda) of the Sumedang Regency Tuti Ruswati, the UI Student Affairs Director Badrul Munir Ph.D., the UI BEM Chair Leon Alvinda Putra, the supervisor lecturer, the committee , and a lecturer at the Central Government Center (IPP) Sumedang, in early January.

The UI Teaching Movement 11 activity was carried out for one month from January 7 to February 6 2022, covering three sub-districts, namely Buah Dua, Jatinunggal, and Cisitu sub-districts. All GUIM 11 programs are implemented by following strict health protocols, namely wearing masks, washing hands, maintaining distance, and carrying out antigen swabsroutinely during the activity.

In his remarks, Agus Wahidin said that learning activities for students at the village level were still facing difficulties, for that the presence of Universitas Indonesia that went directly to the field would help students in the regions. “I believe the presence of these young students will help to grow dreams and motivate both elementary school children and their parents at each action point, because students have such an extraordinary aura,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of Regional Development Planning Agency for Sumedang, Tuti Ruswati, hopes that UI Teaching Movement can spread the benefits and instill positive things in all students and parents at the activity location. He expressed his gratitude to Universitas Indonesia, and hoped that the collaboration between the Sumedang Regency Government and Universitas Indonesiawould continue for the common good.

In response to this, Badrul Munir expressed his gratitude to the local government for allowing the continuation of UI Teaching Movement11 activities in Sumedang. The chairman of Universitas Indonesia (UI) Executive Student Committee, Leon Alvinda Putra, said the same thing. He also asked for guidance and direction from the government at the sub-district and village levels so that UI Teaching Movement 11 activities ran smoothly in accordance with shared expectations.

The first program of UI Teaching Movement 11, which is the Self-Education Class and Mari Nyeni Class, aims to educate elementary school students as a foundation for self-care in the future. The form of delivery of the Self-Education Class is carried out with the hope that students are happy and absorb the material more easily. The first material of this class is about the validation of emotions, where the story entitled “The mountain is me” tells the coolness of the mountains with the morning sun that describes happiness. .

The second program, the Rainbow House Library, aims to encourage the literacy spirit of SDN Karangbungur students. The library was officially opened by the Principal of Karangbungur Elementary School and continued with the symbolic handover of books from UI Teaching Movement 11 to Karangbungur Elementary School. In this program, it was also announced that Rumah Pelangi Ambassadors came from students of Karangbungur Elementary School..

In addition, The 11th UI Teaching Movement organizes a “Healthy Cheerful Body” program at Cibareubeu Elementary School which aims to encourage students at Cibareubeu Elementary School to learn to live healthy. This activity was attended by all students from grades one to six, accompanied by the committee and instructors of 11th UI Teaching Movement. The activity was carried out in the morning, which began with morning exercises together, then continued with the delivery of materials on how to wash hands and brush teeth properly and correctly.

The activity of the “Healthy Cheerful Body” program was continued with the introduction of well-nourished and balanced food in each class. Students are introduced to staple foods, side dishes, vegetables, and even fruit, through a unique means, which is a puzzlegame. “Science about his health is packaged in a simple and interesting way, starting from washing hands, brushing teeth, filling my plate, and taking out the trash. This is also right on target because at Cibareubeu Elementary School there are no trash cans,” said Dian Anggraeni, Project Officer of the 11th UI Teaching Movement.

The fourth program as well as the closing of the 11th UI Teaching Movement Activities is the People’s Festival which is held as one of the events that brings the committee and teachers of GUIM 11 closer to all elements of the village community. The event was attended directly by the Cisitu Sub-district Head, Cisitu Police, Situraja 1011 Koramil, Elementary School Supervisor, village officials, and 11th UI Teaching Movement Activities collaborators. In Karangbungur, villagers participated by participating in various competitions such as tumpeng creation competitions to sack races.

In Cibareubeu, the Festival of the People demonstrated the value of mutual cooperation between the residents and the 11th UI Teaching Movement Activities Committee who together built a stage made of natural materials such as bamboo and others. Representatives of teachers from Cibareubeu and Karangbungur Elementary School, conveyed how memorable the community service event had been by Universitas Indonesia (UI) students for 30 days.
