Approaching the end of 2022, a Universitas Indonesia (UI) student from Vocational Education Program gave UI a prize through the karate sport competition. Aida Shafa Kamilah, from Tourism study program, won 2nd place at International Open Tournament Championship Walikota Surabaya Cup 2022 (15-18 December 2022) for Senior Women’s Kumite 68kg category. The championship, which was held at Bung Tomo Sports Hall, Surabaya, was attended by 2,041 athletes from Indonesia, Malaysia, Timor Leste and India.

For this victory, Director of Vocational Education Program of UI Padang Wicaksono, S.E., Ph.D. said, “Universitas Indonesia is very proud of Aida’s achievement. In fact, Aida also contributed to giving her medals for Indonesia. I hope that Aida can continue to make UI and Indonesia proud in other future matches,” said Padang. One of the preparations Aida made for the championship was regular training with her karate team.

“Previously, I spent more time on independent training because the training routine at Dojo was hindered during the Covid-19 pandemic in early 2021. Hence, I started to do a lot of regular training again with other athletes in 2022,” said Aida. Prior to this, Aida had obtained a number of achievements from karate, including 1st place in SELEKDA JABAR 2021; 2nd place of the National Championship of PB.Forki 2021; 1st place in BK. Porprov 2021; 1st place in Inkai Regional Championship 2022; 1st place in BKF 2022; 2nd place in Jabar Circuit I 2022; 3rd place in Inkai National Championship 2022; 1st Place in Jabar Circuit III 2022; Best of the Best Champion for the Jabar Circuit III 2022; 1st place in Senkaido Open “Menpora Cup” 2022; Best of The Best Winner Senkaido Open 2022; 3rd place in West Java PORPROV 2022; and others.

Aida managed to get a silver medal at Walikota Surabaya Cup 2022 event after competing with five other athletes in her class as one of the representatives from Indonesia. Even though she was in her recovery, Aida still dared to show off her skill and win the championship. She was injured while preparing for the West Java Provincial Sports Week (PORPROV) match. The injuries to her ankles and joints (dislocations) made Aida more careful in preparing for the championship this time. In fact, she is also preparing to take part in the pre-qualification selection for the XXI National Sports Week (PON) in 2023. “I evaluate myself because I also still have flaws. With the opportunity to take part in the PON prequalification, I am motivated to train harder and ready to compete again with other athletes,” said Aida.

As a fifth semester student, Aida will prepare to carry out internship activities as her obligation to complete her final project. Aida is interested in doing an internship as an event organizer, both in sports and other activities. “The challenge I encountered in this championship was time management. While preparing for the championship, I was in my Final Examination week. Moreover, most of the final exam that I did at Vocational UI was practical. Thus, I need to divide my time between practice and study,” said Aida.
