In March 2022, the Government of the Republic of Indonesia issued Law (UU) Number 11 of 2022 concerning Sports. In this regulation it is stated that the central government and regional governments are obliged to provide services and facilities to ensure the implementation of sports activities for every citizen without discrimination. In implementing the law, the support of cooperation from various parties is needed, one of which is from universities. Universitas Indonesia (UI) through the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of Universitas Indonesia (FISIP UI) held a sports-related seminar with the theme “Sports Law and the Campus World” at the Juwono Sudarsono Auditorium, FISIP, UI Depok Campus, on Tuesday (08/11).

This seminar discussed the role and readiness of education providers in meeting the required criteria in order to create a campus that is healthy and has character through scientific development related to sports (sport science). Dean of FISIP UI Prof. Dr. Drs. Semiarto Aji Purwanto, M.Sc. said that sports, achievements, and culture are one unit. Without cultural support (cognitive system), sports achievements will not be appreciated or supported by society. Therefore, the most important element in making sports a culture is family.

“In abroad, sport is a form of parenting activity, but in Indonesia it seems that it has not been implemented too much. In Indonesia, sport as a lifestyle is mostly done in communities, such as cycling communities, running communities, and others to strengthen social solidarity. Therefore, it is our task to grow a sport culture at the family level which is useful for strengthening relationships between family members and instilling health and fitness values,” said Prof. Semiarto.

As one of the speakers in this seminar, Head of Sport Science and Science and Technology of Indonesian National Sports Committee Center Dr. Lilik Sudarwati A. S.Psi., M.H., conveyed that sport in this law functions to develop physical, spiritual, social abilities and shape the character of a dignified national personality which is included in three scopes, namely educational sports, community sports, and achievement sports. In contrast to conditions abroad, sport science is a reference in the development of athletes, whereas in Indonesia it has not been developed or used as a reference.

“This condition will cause Indonesia to be far behind in sports achievements in the future. Thus, it is hoped that universities can play a role in filling this void. Sport science is held to instill character values and acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to build a healthy, active lifestyle for a lifetime,” said Lilik. She further said that the coaching and development of educational sports is carried out and directed as a systemic and continuous unit with the national education system.

For this reason, in implementing this law, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenpora) and Indonesian National Sports Committee (KONI) must be supported by various parties, especially universities to conduct research and advance technology for sports. On the same occasion, a lecturer in International Relations Study Program of FISIP UI, Edy Prasetyono Ph.D., said that sport is a symbol of the superiority of a nation while at the same time strengthening its human beings to become high quality. In addition, through sports, one can also see the ability of a country and the capacity of that country. In the world of education, campus is a center for sports and arts activities that are formed from a combination or interaction of science and academics.

Several other speakers who also attended the discussion were the Chairman of the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) Dr. Agung Firman Sampurna, S.E., M.A.P., CSFA .; An athlete, Trainer, and FISIP UI Alumna, Christal F. Mandagie; and a Badminton Athlete of National Training Center (Pelatnas) and World Rank 15 in the Women’s Doubles Competition, Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti. The seminar, which was held offline, was also attended by representatives of FISIP UI lecturers and students who were expected to work together in creating a healthy and good campus through scientific development related to sports (sport science).
