Desi Adhariani, a lecturer at the Department of Accounting, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia (FEB UI) won the Emerald Young Researcher Award (EYRA) 2021 and became the only researcher from Indonesia to win this award. She competed with five other researchers from various countries in Asia, in January 2022.

“I appreciate Emerald recognizing the hard work of young researchers. So, not only do they give awards to well established researchers, but they also provide opportunities and appreciate early career researchers,” Desi said.

The competition organized by Emerald Publishing in the EYRA category requires researchers to submit a brief essay of 2,000 words, and is a research that has been published in the last two years. The essay should explain the significance and role of the published research for the environment and society.

In the last two years, Desi has had several publications uploaded to Emerald’s journals related to environmental and community topics, because they are in the area of “Sustainability Accounting” and “The Role of Management Accountants in Society”. This is in accordance with the criteria required by Emerald.

“I had to write a piece that expressed the importance of research activities. More broadly, they want to know how research relates to the community (community engagement) and the environment (included in the Sustainable Development Goals component),” Desi said. According to her, there are many pathways to apply various research results.

In Accounting, for example, Desi can apply her accounting knowledge as a consultant for the benefit of the company. However, there is something that is often forgotten, which is doing community service. For this reason, she hopes that his research can make a real contribution in terms of community service and policy implementation. “I am interested in the field of community service to serve marginalized communities who are less touched by accounting academics. Currently, for example, I am trying to raise awareness through research on the water crisis in Bali,” said Desi.

In addition to venturing into the world of journals, she is now starting to share more of her research results popularly on social media. In the future, Desi wants to reach out further to the mass media. With more diverse channels for distributing ideas, she hopes to be indirectly involved in providing awareness and influencing the establishment and implementation of policies. “Research for publication is good for researchers and institutions such as accreditation, university ranking, and so on, but it will be even better if there are benefits for policy, practice, environment, and society,” she said.

Furthermore, she expressed her hopes regarding the award she won. “With this award, I hope there will be more possibilities for researchers from Indonesia, especially Universitas Indonesia, to win similar awards in the future from other leading publishers or institutions, and maybe not only at the Asian level but even higher,” Desi said.
