Development planning is one of the steps to overcome environmental problems that are now felt in the midst of people’s lives, such as extreme temperatures, storms, and major floods. All of these hazards, if traced back to their original causes, are closely related to human interaction and managing the environment around them.

“This significantly increases the frequency and risk of disasters occurring at both domestic and international levels. If it is not regulated, controlled or not significantly reduced, it can increase the risks that can jeopardize the livelihoods of everyone on the planet,” said Dr. dr. Tri Edhi Budhi Soesilo, M. Si., at the 3rd JESSD International Symposium organized by the School of Environmental Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (SES UI), on 27-28 August 2022.

The event, which raised the theme “Challenges in Sustainable Development in Developing Countries”, presented a number of speakers from academia, namely key speakers consisting of RR Ratih Dyah Kusumastuti from the Department of Management, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia (FEB UI), Hui Nee Au Yong from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahmanm, Mari Mulyani from Oxford University, Dian Novarina from ARRIL Group, Jessica Hanafi from LCI Indonesia, and Haruki Agustina from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.

On the first day of the event, the three keynote speakers presented ideas related to developing countries addressing environmental crisis issues, especially waste and environmental political policies.
