Depok, July 31st 2023. Prof. Dr. Lydia Freyani Hawadi, M.Si., M.M., Psychologist, Chair of the Research Cluster on Islamic Studies, Education, Psychology, and Socio-Cultural Studies, with team members Gary Collins Brata Winardy, S.Psi., M.Psi., Psychologist, and Hasna Hafizhah Salwa, S.Psi., M.Psi., Psychologist, conducted a research on “Career Adaptability of Adolescents on Untung Jawa Island”. They carried out this activity with other teams from the School of Strategic and Global Studies (SKSG), as part of Archipelagic Joy Sailing and Research 2023, a collaboration with the Indonesian Navy.

This research received support from Admiral TNI Dr. Muhammad Ali, Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy (KASAL, IKAL XXI Lemhannas RI) and his staff. This research collaboration is expected to mark ongoing research collaboration between the two parties. Contribution of thoughts, ideas, learning, and good practices from this activity will encourage the creation of strong resources for Maritime Indonesia 2045. This research is part of a real effort to further understand Indonesia’s land and water as an archipelagic country, increasing awareness of the potential and dynamics of maritime issues, as well as increasing awareness of the sea and the coast.

There were eight SKSG representatives who took part in this research. Another team under the leadership of Dr. S. Prisca Delima with Dr. Rahmi Yetri Kasri, S.Sos., M.Phil and Patrick Demario, S.Si. as the members conducted research on the topic “Quality of Life and Food Security Post-Pandemic COVID-19”. In addition, the Multilateralism and Migration Research Cluster conducted initial research on the topic “Levels of Human Security on Untung Jawa Island: Evaluation of Population Needs for Food, Water and Energy Security Systems and their Implications for Population Mobility”, led by Henny Saptatia Drajati Nugraheni, S.S. M.A., Ph.D with Febi Rosseva Amalinda, S.Sos. as a member.

The lesson that can be learned from the SKSG-TNI AL research is that there is a different pattern between residents who have migrated and those who have never migrated regarding their views on careers, optimism, and opportunities to develop their own island. On the other hand, the quality of life of the population is generally good, with excellent water security that is climate resistant, and there have been changes in food security after the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, intervention from various stakeholders to participate in developing island communities and infrastructure is needed to help create new opportunities so that the transformation of maritime development can occur.

The awareness to develop and strengthen the character of the Indonesian nation as a maritime nation needs to be carried out together in a cross-sectoral and sustainable manner. A better understanding of the sea and various aspects of its management will certainly have an impact on a national development strategy that carries a maritime vision, so that Indonesia can proactively and dynamically protect national interests, and make the necessary breakthroughs to achieve Indonesia’s goals in 2045 and become the World Maritime Axis.
