The issue of mental health is a widely discussed topic at this time. Someone who is mentally healthy can use his abilities or potential to the fullest in facing life’s challenges. Thus, mental health will greatly affect a person’s performance in every activity.

This problem prompted the Faculty of Administrative Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FIA UI) with Ikatan Wanita Keluarga (IWK) FIA UI and a mental health platform Teduh for holding a Talkshow and Workshop entitled “It’s Okay Not To Be Okay: The Importance of Maintaining Mental Health” by inviting Psychology Content Writer Teduh Shabrina Audinia, M.Psi. in Auditorium EDISI FIA UI, the 4th Floor, M Building FIA UI (17/02).

In her welcoming speech, Chairperson of IWK FIA UI Lyviana Chandra, SE., MM. said “The importance of being aware of mental health issues is to improve the quality of life; increase productivity; maintain healthy relationships; prevent more serious mental health problems, such as anxiety and bipolar depression; and maintain physical health. Therefore, we really need to be open to this issue so that in our family, work, and other environments, we can be happy and have maximum performance.”

Stress is a condition that threatens mental health, which includes the body’s reaction to threats or pressure, such as physical and emotional pressure that can make us uncomfortable; and cannot be avoided by every human being. Psychology Content Writer Teduh Shabrina Audinia, M.Psi. said, “Stress is a normal and healthy reaction that comes from humans from time to time. Stress can help us learn new things, meet deadlines, help us finish a job quickly, and motivate ourselves because of the hormone epinephrine. There are two types of stress. The first one is Eustress Stress, which makes people more enthusiastic and productive in dealing with situations and makes individuals grow. The second is distress that cannot be controlled and happens over a long period. It is also overwhelming and has a negative impact on individuals,” said Shabrina.

To manage stress, it is necessary to understand the things that you cannot control in life. This can be done by coping stress. Coping stress can be done in various ways, which are emotion-focused coping—focusing on the problems that cause stress; problem-focused coping—focusing on controlling emotions that arise from stressful experiences; emotion-focused coping—seeking social support, giving meaning to stressful experiences, providing distance and control in oneself; and problem-focused coping—making plans and goals, behaving assertively, and expressing opinions objectively.

“We can also do simple a technique to help manage stress called “self-help”. The technique can be done by controlling our breathing; grounding; physical activity; and journaling. If you have difficulty managing stress alone, do not hesitate to ask for professional help. It is indeed a natural thing to do,” said Shabrina.
