Universitas Indonesia (UI) held a collaborative discussion with Nazarbayev University, Kazakhstan on Monday (20/11) in Meeting Room B, 2nd Floor, University Administration Center Building, UI Campus, Depok. This discussion talked about the potential for cooperation and collaboration in the academic field and student exchange between UI and Nazarbayev University.

The discussion was opened by remarks from the Head of the Center for Independent Learning (CIL) UI, Fransiskus Astha Ekadiyanto, S.T., M.Sc. to the delegates from Nazarbayev University. “Welcome to all delegates. I hope that today’s discussion can run smoothly and that this discussion can later produce the potential for good collaboration between UI and Nazarbayev University,” said Astha. In his presentation, Astha introduced UI as the oldest university in Indonesia with 14 faculties, two graduate schools, and one vocational education program.

On this occasion, Head of Office of Enrollment Management Nazarbayev University, Nurkhan Omarbekov presented the background and history of Nazarbayev University. Nazarbayev University is one of the leading research universities in Central Asia which was founded on the initiative of the first president of Kazakhstan, Nursultan Nazarbayev in 2010. Located in the heart of the Eurasian continent, precisely in the capital of Kazakhstan, Astana, this university’s admission system is completely based on merit.

Both universities have similarities in supporting student studies. Of the 7000 students (with 200 international students) at Nazarbayev University, 98 percent of them study with a scholarship scheme. In a similar vein, UI also accepts approximately 2000 international students and some of them are funded directly by UI scholarships and government scholarships.

Through this discussion, Nazarbayev University offers a student exchange scheme through a summer class program for UI students who are interested in studying in Kazakhstan with their superior study program. Nazarbayev University focuses on conducting research in several fields of knowledge, including science and technology, social, and education.

Not only student exchanges, academic collaboration between UI and Nazarbayev University can also be carried out between teachers and teaching materials. Both institutions agreed that discussions on this collaboration would continue. After this, UI and Nazarbayev University plan to sign a cooperation agreement or Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration.

This potential collaboration discussion meeting was also attended by other UI representatives, including the Head of the UI New Student Admissions Office, Dr. Gunawan, S.T., M.T; Head of the Academic Data Intelligence Sub Directorate, UI Education Directorate, Fernan, S.Kom. M.Sc; UI International Cooperation Coordinator, Suyanti Adi Pawiro; UI International Association Utilization Officer, Ninez Dwiandra Sekarsari; and UI Academic and Government Partnership Officer, Mohamad Hasan Fitrahman.

Other representatives from Nazarbayev University include the Head of Economic Section of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Bauyrzhan Zhaparov; Senior Manager Admission Department Nazarbayev University, Gaukhar Dyuzelbayeva and Assoc. Professor School of Mining & Geosciences Nazarbayev University, Irawan Sonny.
