At the start of the year, when UI was celebrating its 74th Anniversary, a special “gift” came from the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, which placed UI in 1st place in Indonesia or 10th in Southeast Asia. UI Chancellor, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D., said, “UI’s achievements in Webometrics showed the synergy of UI residents because everything displayed on our website is the result of joint hard work. This ranking does not just assess the appearance of the website, but rather assesses every content published, both in quantity and quality, especially academic relevance content.”

Last year, UI won international awards for scientific publications, and this year, UI is determined to improve its position at the global level. According to Amelita Lusia, Head of the Bureau of Public Relations and Public Information Openness, UI is the only university from Indonesia that is in the Top 10 in Southeast Asia. “UI improved its ranking from 561 in July 2023 to 537 in January 2024,” said Amelita.

The Webometrics ranking assessment indicators are visibility (50%), transparency (10%), and excellence (40%). Visibility assesses the impact of web content through the number of external networks connected to an institution’s web page. Transparency or openness looks at the number of citations from the top 310 authors from Google Scholar Profiles. Meanwhile, excellence or scholar is the number of scientific publication articles among the top 10% most cited from 27 scientific disciplines with Scimago sources.

These indicators consider teaching commitment, research output, international prestige, and the university’s relationship with society, including the industrial and economic sectors. Compared to the July 2023 edition of Webometrics, UI experienced an increase in ranking for all indicators: impact (from 313 to 264), openness (from 727 to 690), and excellence (from 1086 to 1085). UI is the best in Indonesia in terms of openness and excellence.

The Webometrics ranking is carried out by Cybermetric Lab, a Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas research group (CSIC), Spain’s largest public research body. This ranking was carried out on more than 31,000 Higher Education Institutions worldwide.

Since 2004, the Webometrics ranking has been published twice a year, in January and July. This ranking system aims to promote web publications, support open-access initiatives, and access to scientific publications and other academic materials.
