Universitas Indonesia (UI) has again occupied the prestigious position of the best university in Indonesia, based on evaluations conducted by the globally-renowned organisation for the rating of institutes of higher education Times Higher Education (THE). On Wednesday, 1 June 2022, THE published THE Asia University Rankings 2022, which places UI amidst the Top 20 Universities in Asia along institutes of higher education such as the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Universiti Malaya.

In its latest scorings THE took data from 616 universities of 31 countries. THE Asia University Rankings 2022 used 13 peformance indicators, the same ones used in THE World University Rankings and trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industries, and governments. Five performance indicators are used for evaluation, namelyTeaching (the learning environment); Research (volume, income and reputation); Citations (research influence); International outlook (staff, students and research); and Industry Income (knowledge transfer).

UI excels in Indonesia with an overall score of 32.4-34.6. UI achieves a score of 80,7 in the indicator Industry Income, higher than those of the other four indicators. Compared to other institutes of higher education in Indonesia, UI occupied the highest scores in the indicators International Outlook and Teaching.

In response to this magnificent achievement, UI’s Rector, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D, expressed feelings of gratitude for the hard work performed by the entirety of UI’s academic community. “Keep peforming and contributing in the development of the nation in an era of very fast-moving industrial revolution. May we keep being the best in the motherland and [one day] be included amongst the Top 5 of Southeast Asia,” said Prof. Kuncoro.

In Southeast Asia Indonesia occupies the 18th place out of 76 institutions. UI surpassed King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Chiang Mai University, and Vietnam National University, Hanoi. In Southeast Asia UI excels in the indicator Teaching: it has, in this respect, occupied the third position, after NUS and Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.

Meanwhile, UI managed to be listed for one out of the ten categories listed in THE Awards Asia 2022, namely THE Datapoints Impact Award. Scoring on this category was based on data gathered and evaluated independently by THE.

In an official statement, THE’s Chief Knowledge Officer, Phil Baty, stated, “This is the fourth annual THE Awards Asia, and over the past couple of years we have showcased many wonderful examples of universities doing what they do best: adapting briliantly to novel challenges. But throughout this period, their core missions have remained the same: cultivating new ideas; helping students grow into productive and engaged citizens; working collaboratively to tackle problems locally, nationally and internationally; and contributing to efforts to build strong and resilient societies in which people can flourish.

“It was quite a challenge, but eventually we whittled nearly 500 entries down to 80 finalists, and while we of course congratulate the 10 who won this year, everyone who reached the final stages deserves enormous credit for the work they did in 2021. Theirs are all fascinating and inspiring stories, and proof, if it were needed, that Asia’s universities are equipped with the vision, resources, and will to rise to any task,” stated Phil Baty.

THE World University Rankings is the sole global perfomance table to evaluate research-intensive institutes of higher education in all core missions, including education, research, and transfer of knowledge, employing an international outlook to provide a perfectly comprehensive and balanced comparison.
