As a form of responding to the earthquake that occurred on Monday (21/11) in Cianjur Regency, West Java Province, which killed more than 300 people, Universitas Indonesia (UI) dispatched several teams in batch, including a medical team from the Faculty of Medicine (FK) UI and UI Peduli team. Last Thursday (24/11) under the coordination of the evacuation and disaster relief post center of Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Cianjur Regency, UI Peduli dispatched a team from the Directorate of Community Service and Empowerment (DPPM), students from the Student Executive Board (BEM), personnel NuFA of the Faculty of Nursing (FIK), and Campus Environmental Security (PLK) to the disaster site to provide logistics for the victims’ basic needs at the Earthquake Evacuation Post, Sarampad Village and Cijedil Village, Cugenang District, Cianjur, West Java.

They handed over sanitation needs for hundreds of residents in the evacuation shelter, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, children’s milk bottles, baby diapers, adult diapers, sanitary napkins, batteries, emergency lights, and tarpaulins. “The UI Peduli Action is a form of UI’s responsibility to contribute to the handling of natural disasters that have occurred in Indonesia,” said Ns. La Ode Abd Rahman, S.Kp., MBA., the Head of Sub-Directorate for Community Service DPPM UI, representing UI Peduli team. Apart from that, Rahman, who is a lecturer at FIK UI, said that the activities carried out by UI Peduli team were giving multivitamins to children and adults to maintain the resistance and health of their bodies during the post-disaster.

Rahman further said that around 800 residents affected by the earthquake took refuge in the evacuation post. Overall, the people living in the evacuation post experienced a shortage of sanitation equipment. Therefore, UI distributed hundreds of sanitation equipment to meet the needs of the residents.

“We express our gratitude to UI for the aid that has been provided, this aid means a lot to us,” said Irvan, a resident affected by the earthquake.

Before going to the disaster site in Cianjur, UI Peduli team had already coordinated with the evacuation and disaster relief center of BPBD Cianjur Regency to map the conditions at the location and the needs of residents affected by the disaster. UI Peduli is a form of UI community service in action and social assistance, which is distributed to various regions of Indonesia.

UI Peduli continuously supports the government’s response to several natural disasters that have occurred in the country. There are 17 faculties/graduate schools/vocational education programs and work units under the University Administration Center synergizing in the action. UI Peduli is here to provide logistical assistance to meet the basic needs of the victims and affected people, health workers, and others in natural disasters that occur in several regions of Indonesia.
