Universitas Indonesia (UI) volunteers (doctors and students) from the Faculty of Medicine (FK) with Alumni Association (ILUNI) of FKUI and Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) were in Cianjur to provide medical assistance to earthquake victims in Cianjur, West Java. The first batch departed on Tuesday (22/11). Then the next batch with a larger number of medical and aid personnel departed on Saturday (26/11).

The joint ILUNI-FKUI-RSCM team consisted of 30 people including 5 orthopedic specialists; 1 anesthesiologist; 5 orthopedics and anesthesiology residents (Specialist Medical Education Program); 8 people from the Emergency Medical Team (EMT) of ER RSCM (Doctors, Nurses, Pharmacists, and Drivers); and 11 students, divided into three groups and started activities last Thursday (24/11). The first group handled patient operations at Bhayangkara Hospital in Sukabumi (two patients), the second group carried out examinations and assessments of the emergency room patients at Bhayangkara Hospital in Cianjur, and the EMT RSCM Team carried out inter-hospital referral evacuation activities.

According to dr. M. Deryl Ivansyah, SpOT., as the deputy head of the ILUNI-FKUI-RSCM team, “In the afternoon, Team 1 moved closer to Bhayangkara Hospital in Cianjur to help in the operations of fracture patients. There was one referral patient at Bhayangkara Hospital in Sukabumi with a pelvic fracture caused by being hit by earthquake debris. The patient needed emergency treatment, so the team came back to Sukabumi and performed an emergency procedure for installing the anterior frame on the patient.”

At the scene of the incident, aftershocks still occurred early Friday morning (25/11). The team felt quite strong quakes, so they decided to spend the night again in Sukabumi. Later in the morning, UI medical volunteers started their humanitarian action by dividing the joint team into two. Team 1 performed surgery on 1 patient at Bhayangkara Hospital in Sukabumi; gave out donation of disposable medical supplies in the form of plaster to Bhayangkara Hospital in Cianjur; and coordinated with doctors at Sayang Regional Hospital in Cianjur.

On Friday, the team received a report that the operating room was ready to be used again and the number of patients in the emergency room was starting to decrease. Meanwhile, Team 2 with dr. Fifi (ILUNI FKUI Management) conducted evaluation and coordinated with the Health Crisis Center, CEO of Bhayangkara Hospital in Cianjur, Sayang Regional Hospital in Cianjur, volunteers, and local residents to find a location for the establishment of a medical team post and distribution of ILUNI-FKUI-RSCM logistical assistance.

In a written report, dr. M. Deryl Ivansyah, SpOT. conveyed the follow-up plan for the ILUNI-FKUI-RSCM joint team based on the health cluster meeting at the Crisis Center on Thursday (24/11). “Because the flow of patients who were directly affected by the disaster had decreased, and the organic (internal) team at the hospital was deemed sufficient to provide services, it was decided that the EMT RSCM Ambulance and Anesthesia Team will return to Jakarta; The Orthopedic Team and ILUNI FKUI doctors remain on standby at the disaster site in preparation for opening a medical post and performing surgical assistance if it is needed again; as well as we prepare for the post-disaster follow-up team for the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase.
