13 students from the Faculty of Nursing (FIK) Universitas Indonesia (UI) took part in the HILARIUS SCIENTIFIC COMPETITION 2023 which was held by the Gadjah Mada University Nursing Student Association (UGM), from 1st to 3rd of September 2023. Several branches of the competition that were participated in included scientific essay, public posters and nursing olympiads. This activity raised the topic of palliative care with the general theme “Developing culture and attitudes of palliative care among the community and prospective health workers”.

In this competition, FIK UI won two championships, namely Winner Public Poster in the names of Danny Rahman and Alwa Dibsailya Haji, and 1st Runner Up Scientific Essay in the names of Yunda Awalia and Cahyani Salma. Apart from that, one of the Nursing Olympiad teams was also able to reach the top 5 in this international competition.

Danny, one of the winners of the public poster competition, stated that the process he went through to become the champion was quite long. “The process was not easy, Alwa and I started preparing from June to August for brainstorming, looking for references, determining content, and even making posters. Apart from that, we also have to be able to divide our time because we are already studying,” said Danny.

Furthermore, as a partner, Alwa added regarding the contents of the poster that brought them first place at the international level, “Our poster discusses Palliative Care is Everybody’s Business. The aim is to increase awareness and reduce the bad stigma about palliative care by providing education using Game Cards called GENOTIVE CARDS.”

Alwa expressed his hope that the ideas they put forward in the poster could make a contribution to increasing public understanding about palliative care, especially palliative care in Indonesia.

Apart from posters, FIK UI also won 2nd place in the scientific essay competition with a focus on discussions related to innovation in increasing awareness regarding Palliative Care in the community. “We use forum theater as the main approach in our innovation. Through this innovation, we hope that students as the nation’s driving generation can play a role in increasing public awareness of the importance of palliative care,” said Yunda.

Apart from their challenge of creating innovations with material they have not received in lectures, they also need to present the results of their essays in English.

“The biggest challenge may be because our opponents are not only from the nursing faculty, but also other health faculties in Indonesia, such as medicine. Apart from that, during the competition we have to speak full English.” Yunda continued.

There is great hope that, with maximum support from the campus, students will be able to continue to make achievements and increase their enthusiasm to continue to hone their critical thinking skills through a series of other competitions.
