In order to deal with digital transformation in the world of education, the Board of Trustees of Universitas Indonesia (MWA UI) held a seminar entitled “A Discussion On Digital Transformation”, at Balai Sidang, UI Depok Campus (17/03). Aiming to discuss the vision of Indonesia’s digital transformation, the seminar invited the Director of National University Singapore (NUS) Agility Office, Roy Tan; NUS Chef Information Technology Officer, Tan Shui-Min; and Professor of the Faculty of Computer Science (Fasilkom) UI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Eko Kuswardono Budiardjo. M.Sc.

In his welcoming speech, Rector of Universitas Indonesia (UI) Prof. Ari. Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D. said, “Universities are expected to be able to compete with other universities in the world. Through collaboration, they are able to increase economies of scale and reduce costs and uncertainty between tasks and budget constraints. However, not only physical capital and information technology, but human quality also becomes an important part of enhancing collaboration and relations globally.”

Chairperson of MWA UI, Dr. (HC) Noni Purnomo, B.Eng., MBA., said, “In the world of education, digital transformation aims to create an educational environment that makes achievements and is comfortable for all participants involved in it. The most important thing in this digital transformation process is individuals’ capability and collaboration in responding to existing challenges. Human capability as human capital supported by adequate technology is a resource that continues to develop according to relevant capacities. Through digital transformation, we hope that it can improve good university governance for UI and universities.” said Dr. Noni.

In explaining successful digital transformation as a result of meticulous planning, collaboration, and commitment to continuous improvement at National University of Singapore (NUS), Director of National University Singapore (NUS) Agility Office, Roy Tan and NUS Chef Information Technology Officer, Tan Shui-Min stated that the advantages universities can obtain through digital transformation include 1) Greater innovation; 2) Increasing student involvement; 3) Increasing efficiency and productivity; 4) Greater agility; 5) Greater resilience; 6) Better resource management; and 7) Ongoing relevance.

“Digital transformation is not just about technology adoption. It changes mindsets and organizational culture to ensure that technology can be used as an impact multiplier,” said Roy Tan.

Echoing what was conveyed by Roy Tan and Tan Shui-Min, regarding Smart Campus activities that are integrated at UI, Professor of the Faculty of Computer Science (Fasilkom) UI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Eko Kuswardono Budiardjo. M.Sc. explained “Currently, there are around 86 applications and challenges in UI, which need to be integrated step by step into one unit. This is done so that future data can be used by AI technology to carry out data analytics activities related to future campus activities; one of which is currently Single UI Sign On (SSO). Hence, there is a need for improvement and collective awareness at UI to collaborate to support the advancement of UI, especially in IT governance,” said Prof. Eko.
