Autonomous technology keeps on improving. Thus, students of UI also took part in this innovation by creating an autonomous vehicle that can be use for underwater. Zulfah Zikrina, Aldwin Akbar Hermanudin, and Hitomi Hadinuryana who are incorporated in Autonomous Marine Vehicle UI Team successfully developed a device that later known as underwater drone.

This innovation brought theme as one of UI research in Tanoto Student Research Award 2016. The device that named Makara-06 is an autonomous underwater vehicle that is designed with hybrid ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) and AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) concepts.

Makara-06 is designed to be able to work for 4 hours in underwater for up to 100 meters depth. Zikrina said that Makara-06 is designed for specific underwater mission, such as security, underwater research, as well as disaster management. “Hopefully it will be useful for our country,” said her.

Makara-06 has several features, that are recording picture, video, and under the sea shape detection. The censor capability to create image becomes excess of this underwater drone. Thanks to guidance of  Dr. Ario Sunar Baskoro and Dr. Ir. Sunaryo, Makara-06 keeps on improving. This drone was developed from previous autonomous device that can be operated on the water surface. With cost not more than 20 million IDR, Makara-06 could be developed in 5 months.

This underwater drone size is 610 mm x 230 mm x 392 mm with 10 kg weights. It use 3 motors so that it has 3 level freedom. There are 2 motors with boost power 2 x 2.31 kgf and vertical thruster sebesar 1 kgf. A camera implanted as underwater sensing sensor. Not only took national achivement, Makara-06 is also ready to grab achievement in International RoboBoat Competition in Virginia next July.
