The demand for professional nurses continues to increase. Several factors have triggered the increase in the need for nurses, including the high awareness of the global community for health and a healthy lifestyle. Responding to this challenge, the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Indonesia (FIK UI) continues to make various efforts to produce competent and professional nurses, one of which is by holding higher education for nurses at bachelor, nurse, master, specialist, to doctoral levels.

At the undergraduate (S1) education stage, all students in the fourth semester are prepared to carry out clinical practice in several hospitals and health services in collaboration with FIK UI. Before going into the field of clinical practice, 56 students first took an oath through a clerkship ceremony on Friday, 19th of May 2023 at the FIK UI Education and Laboratory Building, Depok campus. The taking of this clerk’s oath is a form of responsibility in carrying out all codes of ethics while serving as a nurse.

In his remarks, the Dean of FIK UI, Agus Setiawan, S.Kp., M.N., D.N conveyed the message that students are required to be competent in carrying out clinical procedures in order to meet the basic needs of patients. “There are several competency standards that must be achieved by FIK UI graduates, the first is professional practice including discipline, punctuality, honesty, and always caring. The second point is ethical and legal, namely the obligation to keep secrets, be fair to patients, prioritize patient interests, provide benefits to patients and their families, and comply with applicable law. Then the third is personal development, education, and research. Even though one has practiced in a clinic, one must be consistent in learning to develop knowledge because the conditions of patients and society are dynamic,” continued Agus who is also Chair of the Indonesian Nurses Association Educational Institution (AIPNI.

Clinical practice is a very important phase in the process of producing competent and professional nursing staff. It is hoped that students can be exposed to the clinic as early as possible, start getting used to interacting with patients and their families, and can apply theory about the nursing process.
