STEFEN WELIADI FROM FKUI WON SIRIRAJ INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY, PARASITOLOGY, AND IMMUNOLOGY COMPETITION, AT MAHIDOL UNIVERSITY

Stefan Weliadi Ali, a student at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Indonesia (FKUI), won the Silver Medal for the individual category at Siriraj International Medical Microbiology, Parasitology, and Immunology Competition (SIMPIC) 2023. The competition was organized by the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, Thailand, on March 2–5, 2023.

SIMPIC 2023 is the 12th event since it was first held in 2012. This international competition is an annual event held as an exchange of knowledge for medical students, especially knowledge in the fields of infection, microbiology, immunology, and parasitology.

There are 54 teams from various countries participating in this year’s SIMPIC. FKUI student delegations who participated in this event were Stefen Weliadi Ali (FKUI 2018), Hendra Gusmawan (FKUI 2019), Nadine Aurelie (FKUI 2019), and Hafsa Hapsari (FKUI 2019). Stefan successfully passed several assessment stages, such as the individual examination and the team competition, so he obtained the top score and won the Silver Medal.

“It is an honor for me to have been entrusted as an FKUI delegate and to be able to make FKUI proud by winning the Silver Medal in this international event. Hopefully, the successors who will become SIMPIC delegates next year can achieve even better achievements,” said Stefen.

He added that his achievements were inseparable from the role of his supervisors who accompanied him during the preparation and the competition. They came from the Department of Microbiology FKUI, namely Dr. dr. Yeva Rosana, MS, Sp.MK(K); Dr. dr. Mardiastuti HW, M.Sc, Sp.MK(K); dr. Fera Ibrahim, M.Sc, Ph.D, SpMK(K); dr. Beti Ernawati Dewi, Ph.D; Fithriyah, M.Biomed, Ph.D; and from the Department of Parasitology FKUI, namely dr. Yenny Djuardi, Ph.D, Sp.Park.K.

“I would like to thank the doctors who have taken the time to guide and teach us about tropical infection science, immunology, parasitology, and clinical microbiology. Also, special thanks to dr. Yeva as our supervisor, for guiding us from the preparation stage to the day of the competition in Thailand,” said Stefan.

For this achievement, Dean of FKUI Prof. Dr. dr. Ari Fahrial Syam, Sp.PD-KGEH, MMB, appreciated the students who had excelled in the SIMPIC 2023 event, especially Stefen Weliadi Ali who won the Silver Medal. “I am indeed proud that you can enhance the good name of FKUI in the international arena. Our appreciation also goes to the supervisors who have accompanied these students during the preparation to the competition. Hopefully, this achievement can inspire other students to make proud achievements,” said Prof. Ari Fahrial.
