Challenges of Using AI in Medicine

Universitas Indonesia > News > Faculty of Medicine News > Challenges of Using AI in Medicine

Chair of the Medical Technology Cluster and Chair of the IMERI Big Data Center, Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia (UI), Prasandhya Astagiri Yusuf, S.Sc., M.T., Ph.D., explained some of the latest AI technologies that are used in the world of medicine, in discussion on “Ethics of Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Medical Field”, during the Medicine UI 74th Anniversary Workshop, in IMERI Hall (3/3).

Among them are automated machine learning, federated learning, and Generative AI. Prasandhya said that automated machine learning can carry out predictive modeling or automatic categorization of big health data without programming coding (AI to build AI). Federated learning facilitates collaborative multicenter prediction model creation without requiring the exchange of medical data. Meanwhile, Generative AI is able to produce synthetic data from training data, whether based on text, images, or videos.

Nevertheless, he said, the use of AI in the medical field must still conform to ethical principles. This principle includes transparency, accountability, and justice, which are important foundations for ensuring that AI’s application benefits society and does not cause detrimental consequences.

He added that the use of AI technology must be balanced with strengthening moral accountability to avoid bias. The reason is that AI is used as a tool or tool to complement, not replace, clinical decisions. This means that AI will not replace the profession of health workers, but health workers who can reliably utilize AI will replace practitioners who do not use it.

“To overcome the challenges in managing big health data and ensure that the development of AI models runs smoothly, multidisciplinary collaboration between clinicians, computer scientists, data scientists, and biostatisticians is needed. Clear regulations from the government regarding the use of AI in the health sector are also important to avoid ethical and legal problems that may arise,” said Prasandhya.

Apart from discussing the ethics of using AI in the medical field, at the seminar, there was also a discussion on “Artificial Intelligence (AI) The Future of Medicine: Helping or Replacing the Role of Doctors?”. The speaker is Prof. Dr. Eng. Wisnu Jatmiko, S.T., M.Kom.; Prof. Dr. Dr. Budi Wiweko, Sp.OG(K); Dr. Dr. Lies Dina Liastuti, Sp. JP(K); Dr. Benny Zulkarnaien, Sp. Rad(K); and dr. Eric Daniel Tenda, DIC, Ph.D, Sp.PD, KP, FINASIM, FISQUA.
