Ergonomic Position to Avoid Lordosis, Scoliosis, and Kyphosis

As an effort to prevent the spread of Covid-19 transmission cases, some companies in Indonesia have implemented a work from home (WFH) system. In increasing work productivity and comfort while working which is something that should be considered. A worker must pay attention to various ergonomic positions while working, for physical comfort.

Things that needed to be considered from physical ergonomics are attitudes at work, the environment, and body posture that must be maintained during work. Most workers who undergo wfh often ignore a poor sitting position. In fact, the sitting position is very important to pay attention to in order to keep the worker’s body in good shape and avoid the body from lordosis, scoliosis, and kyphosis. This was conveyed by Ahmad Agus Susanto (Occupational Health and Safety staff at UI Hospital) via Instagram @rs.ui on Tuesday (25/01).

Lordosis is a way of sitting workers who are more inclined inward, this position is quite dangerous because of the excessive forward leaning of the spine. Unlike lordosis, scoliosis is a sitting position that tends to the side to resemble the letter “S”. If left unchecked, this will be dangerous and can lead to complications of other diseases of the bone. Meanwhile, kyphosis is a sitting position of workers who are too bent even more than 50 degrees. Habits like this need to be changed, especially in the conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic, which is not over yet so that workers often sit in front of laptop or computer screens because of the implementation of the work from home system (WFH).

Ergonomics that need to be known and considered is cognitive ergonomics. Cognitive ergonomics is important to be applied by workers in order to minimize errors in work such as interactions between workers, or the use of work tools. Ergonomics is directly related to the nervous system of the brain, so concentration and accuracy in every step must be done carefully. Mental health is also one of the motivating factors for workers in implementing the principles of cognitive ergonomics.

In addition to physical and cognitive ergonomics, there are organizational ergonomics that should be applied by workers. Collaboration with related parties must be implemented properly in order to build comfort in carrying out performance. If it is carried out in a wfh way, coordination through networks or communication tools is important to build a work system that is not only healthy, but also comfortable.

Next is environmental ergonomics, which includes temperature, lighting, noise, work location, which can affect workers in carrying out activities during work. Agus reminded that it is important to apply these four ergonomics during work in order to avoid conflicts at work, increase comfort, avoid accidents or illness during work and the most important thing is that work goes smoothly.

Agus said workers are required to apply safety procedures, both WFH and WFO to avoid various complaints, such as back pain, tingling, muscle pain, pain in the skeleton, aches, and others. He emphasized that workers should not use mobile phone communication devices when looking down, because it can cause a syndrome and have a bad impact on the eyes. Not only that, the use of cellphones when looking down also causes dizziness, pain in the neck, and shoulders.

To anticipate this, Agus invites workers to do an ice breaking by doing stretching on the sidelines of busy work, namely shaking their hips, flexing their wrists, straightening their legs, twisting their necks, and others. “Sometimes things like this are often forgotten by workers, they are too enthusiastic to work, so they forget to rest their body parts,” he said.
