A trading competition which required considerable emotional control is what Adrian, a 2021 batch undergraduate student of Management from the Faculty of Economy and Business, signed up for. He learned to stay focused and remain consistent with the trading plan he prepared even when stock prices were yet not progress as he expected. “What is important is not to be ‘down’ when other competitors earn profits before we do,” he said, reflecting on his experience.

Muhammad Adrian Syaputra won the third place in the Indonesia Financial Expo and Forum 2021, or IFEF for short, a series of investment-themed events held from 27 September to 25 October 2021, held by Kontan and PT RTI Infokom with support from Ipotfund.

The Trading Competition, part of IFEF 2021, employed volume analysis, moving average convergence divergence (MACD), cash flow, candlestick patterns, and other methods of analysis, Adrian explained. “All of them are collaborated [sic] during the competition.” He provided an overview of the competition’s mechanism. “All participants are given the same amount of virtual capital amounting to 200 million rupiahs (ca. US$13,000 / CN„94,000), with which they are to generate capital gain, or the highest profit margin, by trading stocks on Kompas 100. The Trading Competition alone lasted from 11 to 29 October 2021.

Assessment is conducted openly. During the match, the public and competitors were able to view the proceedings through a website — competitors were given free rein to see how their rivals were faring. Assessment indicators, in brief, only obliged competitors to trade stocks in Kompas 100. Other more specific stipulations restate what have been explained at the beginning of the competition.

Andrian commented his achievements in the match. “I managed to obtain a 19.59% profit margin for two weeks, more or less, exceeding other competitors and establishing myself in the third place.” Adrian’s experience in this match has prompted several plans for the future. “I plan to increase my skills and financial literacy, and study fundamental analyses so as to be able to win other trading competitions.

IFEF 2001’s Trading Competition aims to train investors in analysing investees before purchasing stocks. The competition could not have been held without the participation of, and collaboration within ministries, agencies, financial regulators, associations, financial services agencies, the media, and academicians.” Winners were announced on Tuesday (2/11/2021) through Kontan’s social media accounts.

The competition was open to any Indonesian citizen who are over 17 years of age and possess Indonesian citizenship identity cards (KTP). Participants come from a wide array of backgrounds: students, public servants, members of the police and armed forces, employees, housewives, entrepreneurs, financial security management employees, and employees of private companies.
