The Faculty of Medicine of the Universitas Indonesia (FM UI) officially opened a new study program for the Subspecialist level (Sp2), namely the Orthopaedic and Traumatology Subspecialist Study Program. This is the first Sp2 program in Indonesia in Orthopaedics and Traumatology.
Sp2 Orthopaedic and Traumatology Study Program aims to develop medical science and technology in the field of orthopaedics and traumatology that can compete globally. This program is also expected to produce subspecialist doctors who are professional, responsible, innovative, and able to collaborate inter and multidisciplinary in solving public health problems in the field of orthopaedics and traumatology.
In addition, it is expected to improve the management of multidisciplinary or transdisciplinary collaborative research and quality orthopaedic and traumatology health services by considering the humanities aspects of patients, carrying out community service with the dissemination of knowledge, and educating the nation’s life to improve the welfare of the Indonesian people.
The opening of this new study program has gone through an evaluation process from the Indonesian Medical Council and accreditation from the Indonesian Health Higher Education Independent Accreditation Institute. The opening ceremony was held in SAF Room, 2nd floor, Building H, FM UI Salemba Campus on Wednesday (19/01) offline and online.
Dean of FM UI Prof. Dr. dr. Ari Fahrial Syam, SpPD-KGEH, MMB said, “We know that soon we will enter the era of the ASEAN Economic Community. Although it still seems unclear, but the commitment that in 2025 the movement of various professions in ASEAN will become a free area, including doctors, and this must be anticipated. Earlier it was mentioned that our homework is a matter of quantity and distribution. The opportunity when foreign doctors enter is the opportunity for these two things. Therefore, this is a mandate for us in educational institutions how we can pursue the number of specialists or subspecialists.”
“Alhamdulillah, with the existence of this orthopaedic and traumatology subspecialty program, hopefully the problem can be solved. Hopefully, the 12 Sp1 (orthopaedic) programs in Indonesia will also think about gradually increasing the number of students for specialist-1 and have also started thinking about opening Sp2. Again, this is for our community. So we should not be the host for our patients,” said Prof. Ari.

The Head of the Sp2 Orthopaedic and Traumatology Study Program of FM UI, Prof. Dr. dr. Achmad Fauzi kamal, Sp.OT (K) stated, “In this Sp2 Orthopaedic and Traumatology Study Program, there are 9 specializations with a study time of 2 years. In collaboration with various leading educational and research facilities at FM UI, and also including the Main Teaching Hospital RSUPN dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo and several network hospitals both at home and abroad, this study program is ready to produce superior orthopaedic and traumatology subspecialist doctors who can answer the nation’s health problems, especially in the fields of orthopaedics and traumatology.”
Until the proposal to open the Sp2 Orthopaedic and Traumatology Study Program was submitted, an OT Specialist who will become a consultant in Indonesia, must undergo a fellowship education program managed by the Collegium of Orthopaedics and Traumatology with a length of education of 1 year or more. Some of the fellowship programs of the College of Orthopaedics and Traumatology that have been running include: Orthopaedic Spine Fellowship based in RSCM Jakarta (since 1994); Hand and Microsurgery Fellowship which is based in Dr. Hospital. Soetomo Surabaya (since 2001); Hip and Knee Adult Reconstruction Fellowship based at RSCM (since 2018) and at Fatmawati Hospital in 2010 and continued by Dr. Soetomo Hospital (since 2017); Orthopedic Oncology Fellowship which is based in RSCM and RS Dr. Soetomo (since 2015); and Orthopedic Sport Fellowship based at RSCM (since 2018).
Now, with the opening of the Sp2 Orthopaedic and Traumatology Study Program at FM UI, orthopaedic and traumatology specialists have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in a formal education program and obtain a diploma / graduation certificate from a university / educational institution equivalent to a doctoral level of education in accordance with the rules and regulations in force in Indonesia.
The program curriculum is prepared in accordance with the competencies of Sp2 Orthopaedics that will be achieved upon graduation and is carried out in stages according to Indonesian Medical Council Regulation Number 91 of 2021 concerning Professional Education Standards for Orthopaedic and Traumatology Subspecialists. In the first stage, learners will be provided with basic knowledge and basic skills.
The second stage is an internship which consists of learning activities in semester 2 to semester 3, with the material of special expertise courses, academic application courses in the field of specialization, and professional application courses in the field of specialization. The third stage is the independent stage of the learner.
Curriculum references mostly refer to curricula that have been accredited by international accreditation bodies such as the curriculum of the American College of Surgeon (ACS) which has been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) as a reference for specialization in adult reconstruction of the hip and knee and advanced trauma specialization.
Sp2 Orthopaedic and Traumatology Study Program of FM UI provides an opportunity for consultant orthopaedic and traumatology specialists who have completed the fellowship program to take part in the RPL (Recognition of Past Learning) program, so that students can only follow the modules needed and the study time can be shorter than four semesters.
The Sp2 Orthopaedic and Traumatology Study Program at FM UI will begin opening registration in the February-March 2022 period through Postgraduate SIMAK UI. A more complete explanation of the FM UI Sp-2 Orthopaedic and Traumatology Study Program can be seen on the Medicine UI YouTube channel.
