Asia’s Important Role for the World: UI and Asia Institute-University of Melbourne Agreed on Inter-University Partnership

Asia has a big role in building the welfare of the world community. To enhance studies on cultural, historical, religious, and political diversity in Asia, the School of Strategic and Global Studies, Universitas Indonesia (SKSG UI) has collaborated with Asia Institute, University of Melbourne.

As published on its official website, Asia Institute, University of Melbourne, Australia has an important relationship with the Asian region in political, economic, and strategic terms. Economic transformation occurred in China, India, and Southeast Asian countries. Even the economic growth in the Asian region has surpassed that of Europe and North America.

This collaborative academic activity will be implemented in the form of teaching between the two universities as well as other academic activities to strengthen the quality of education. SKSG UI and Asia Institute can apply for grants to each other to improve research outcomes and publications. In addition, this cooperation will be expanded to non-academic activities, such as business and industry, as the results of the previous program development.

In the meeting, SKSG UI and Asia Institute agreed on several points. First, Asia Institute lecturers can teach regularly as Adjunct Professors at SKSG UI; become a Co-Supervisor/Promoter for students at SKSG UI; or become Main Reviewer for international journals. Second, both students and lecturers at both institutions can take part in the exchange program. Finally, the two institutions can collaborate to hold seminars, symposiums, workshops, and international conferences.

Regarding the publication of international journals, Asia Institute owns Melbourne Asia Review, which is a peer-reviewed digital hybrid journal-blog that publishes articles on major issues related to Asia. With four issues released annually, Melbourne Asia Review has more than 300 peer-reviewed articles covering a wide range of Asia-related research. The journal publishes selected articles in various mainstream media and academic publications in various languages.

Through its undergraduate and postgraduate study programs, Asia Institute promotes the study of languages and intellectual, cultural, as well as political and religious traditions of Asia and the Islamic world. Language programs include Arabic, Chinese, Indonesian, and Japanese. Meanwhile, for broad studies, Asia Institute has nine fields of study, which are Asian Studies, Arabic Studies, Chinese Studies, Gender Studies, Indonesian Language and Studies, Islamic Studies, Japanese Language and Studies, Korean Studies, and Language Other Than English (LOTE) Accreditation Exams.

The signing of the collaboration agreement between UI and University of Melbourne was represented by Director of SKSG UI Athor Subroto, S.E., M.M., M.Sc., Ph.D. and Director of Asia Institute, University of Melbourne, Prof. Vedi Renandi, last October, at the IASTH Building, UI Campus, Salemba, Jakarta. The event was attended by Head of Global Strategic Studies Doctoral Study Program Dr. Drs. A. Hanief, M.S.; Secretary of Global Strategic Studies Doctoral Study Program Muhammad Syaroni Rofii, S.H.I., M.A., Ph.D .; Head of Police Science Study Program Dr. Chairul Muriman Setyabudi, M.P .; SKSG UI Professor, Prof. Dr. Abhimanyu Takdir Alamsyah, M.Sc.; and Head of the School Administration Agency Abidin Eko Priyono, M.T.I.
