Vaize Team of three students from the Universitas Indonesia –M. Aqil Drajat Ramadhan and Zahra Tedjowongso (Creative Business Study Program, Vocational Education Program), and Erfina Arthur (Biomedical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering) – have played a role in today’s technological advances. They succeeded in creating innovative personal hair coloring technology with Artificial Intelligence (AI). Thanks to the innovative work called “L’Oréal Professionnel DyeVerse”, Aqil and his team were awarded Favorite Team Indonesia 2024 at the L’Oréal Brandstorm 2024 event on March 27.

The Vaize Team qualified as the Top 10 National Finalists to be re-selected by L’Oréal Indonesia Headquarters in the final pitching with the President Director and C-Level L’Oréal Indonesia on the day before the announcement of the winners. L’Oréal Brandstorm is a global innovation competition for the younger generation from the L’Oréal Groupe which has been running since 1992 globally and 2009 in Indonesia.

The innovative work offers several things. First, a dye with three integrated sensors. The sensor collects scientific information about trichology (a study on scalp and hair health). Second, the AI formulation is information from sensors, then analyzed using artificial intelligence on a second device called “Verse”.

Lastly, personal formulation with AI can provide perfect formula that suits consumers’ hair needs. This innovation consists of four main components, namely the Dye Device (producing color); Verse (AI analysis tool); Salon Cycle (integrated hair waste cleaning process); and DyeVerse App (enhance the salon experience online and offline).

“As a beauty and lifestyle enthusiast, I enjoy understanding product knowledge and following innovations from brands in the L’Oréal Groupe. I am also very enthusiastic about breaking boundaries for the Hair Professional Industry through the innovation that my team and I provide,” said Aqil.

The competition from January to March 2024 was attended by Aqil and the team to develop themselves, gain new opportunities, and contribute to the hair professional industry in a better future. Aqil added, “It is hoped that this achievement will encourage the youth who want to work in the creative industry to dare to dream and pursue their passion with hard work, determination, and creativity.”

This DyeVerse innovation combines artificial intelligence technology and biocensors. In the artificial intelligence section, through deep learning, machine vision, automation, and robotics, Creative Business students learned from Artificial Intelligence courses. Director of the UI Vocational Education Program, Padang Wicaksono, S.E., Ph.D, said that the curriculum created by UI Vocational has adapted technological developments, including artificial intelligence to fit future industrial needs.

According to Padang, the application of learning in the classroom can be done through competitions, like Aqil and the team. “Through collaboration between faculties, I hope Universitas Indonesia students can continue to create various innovations that positively impact society. The achievements by the Vaize Team prove that UI students are outstanding people to build the future,” said Padang.
