As a university that always wants to contribute to the development of Indonesia and the world, the Universitas Indonesia (UI) show its dedication through the “UI Investment and Start Up Forum.” This is the first forum to showcase product innovations in the health and pharmaceutical sector, as well as showcase start-ups created by the nation’s young generations.

This activity presented the General Chairperson of the Association of Indonesian Securities Companies Heru Handayanto as the keynote speaker. In his presentation, he said, along with the increasing trend of retail customer investment and from the capital market perspective, 2022 will be a significant growth momentum for retail and institutional customers. “Looking at the trend of start-upinvestment, Indonesia is now home to eleven unicorns start-up in Southeast Asia. Over the past two years, unicorns in Indonesia have company valuations above 1 USD or around 14 trillion Rupiah,” said Heru.

On the first day of the webinar, three product innovations came from the Faculty of Medicine (FK), the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG), and the Universitas Indonesia Hospital (RSUI). The superior product produced by Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) UI carries the theme “Towards a Dental Caries Free Indonesia 2030”. This is based on the results of the 2018 Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) which states that the largest proportion of dental problems in Indonesia is caries teeth.

On this basis, the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) UI researchers carried out a strategy in the management of dental caries through the stages of prevention, early treatment and advanced or further treatment. “In terms of prevention, we already have caries prevention vaccines, namely DNA Vaccine and Egg Yolk IGY. Then there is the early stage of treatment, namely Flolis (Propolis Fluoride) and the advanced stage of treatment is the Light Curing Unit(Light-Based Polymerization Tool),” said the Dean of FKG UI, Dr. drg. Nia Ayu Ismaniati, MDSc., Sp.Ort(K).

Meanwhile, FKUI created a tool to catch viruses through dropletsor from exhaled air by developing two methods, namely Gel Membrane Collector and Liquid Media Virus Collector. “We have done several studies and it is proven that this tool is better than other models and we have successfully done the samplingin less than one minute,” said FKUI Research and Community Service Manager, Dr. dr. Rahyussalim, SpOT(K).

Further, dr. Rahyussalim conveyed another finding from FKUI, namely “Lumbosacroiliac Spine Implant” is an orthopedic implant that is useful for treating spinal defects, especially the sacral lumbar.

“We see that there are quite a lot of cases in Indonesia and there are various implants that are currently not available and are not suitable for the sacral lumbar, so we designed and developed the Lumbosacroiliac Spine Implant. This implant is suitable for various cases,” said dr. Rahyussalim, who is also the Project Leader in this finding.

Meanwhile, RSUI which also displays its innovative product, namely Wearable-health MonitoringBased on the Internet of Thing (IoT) plays a role in helping early detection of heart and blood vessel disease. The main director of RSUI (Universitas Indonesia Hospital) Dr. dr. Astuti Giantini Sp.PK(K), MPH., said this was necessary to answer the need for telemedicine in the future. For example, there is an increased need for monitoring vital signs related to the risk of cardiovascular disease such as heart rhythm disorders, athletes, and military training to avoid the risk of heart attack and sudden cardiac death during activity or work.

The UI Investment and Start up Forum consists of three series of events, namely, the Investment Forum webinar to introduce the results of innovation products from faculties within UI which was held on 7-8 April 2022. Then, continued with Due Diligence for start ups on 9-12 April 2022 and ended with the culmination of the event on April 14, 2022, which was held on the Indonesia Stock Exchange.
