Student of Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia (FKUI) year of 2016, Adriana Viola Miranda,
successfully achieved two prestigious achievement as Runner-up of Oral Presentation in Oncology and
Best Ambassador in Bukovinian International Medical Congress (BIMCO) 2018 that was held on April 4 th
to 6 th 2018 in Chernivtsi, Ukraine.
In the conference, Miranda presenting her literature review that was titled “Evaluation of Circulating
MiRNA Analysis: Potential Biomarker of Breast Cancer“. This literature review was a scientific paper that
she was done with Afif Rasyad (FKUI, year of 2016) under guidance of dr. Dewi Friska, MKK, and had
achieved the first place on Tanjungpura Medical Scientific Competition (TMSC) 2018, last March.
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in the world. On the other hand, early detection
methods that exist are still less specific, less sensitive and still invasive.
In fact, early detection may reduce mortality rate of breast cancer since mortality usually happen in the
end stage. Thing that was discussed in Miranda’s literature review is about early detection method of
breast cancer using MiRNA.
MiRNA, or microRNA, is molecule in our body that play a role in regulatory process of protein expression.
This molecule is conserved, steady and resistant to degradation, thus usually used by researcher as
biomarker of various disease. The miRNA that was chosen by Miranda is circulating miRNA since the
picking is not too invasive.
Based on literature searching, it was found that circulating miRNA detection method is indeed can be
used as early detection method of breast cancer. However, there are still several problem that should be
solved before this method is widely implemented.
In her literature review, Miranda gave several analysis in order to make that early detection method
widely implemented. “I hope that the potency of this method can be deeply excavated and the deficiency
can be improved so that this can be widely implemented to public as soon as possible. Breast cancer
early detection that is more sensitive, specific and accurate will prevent breast cancer to reach the end
stage,” said her.
BIMCO 2018, is a scientific conference that is held by Bukovinian State Medical University (BSMU). With
“Innovations and Prospects of Modern Medicine”, BIMCO 2018 invited medical students and young
researchers from all over the world to be the participant. On this year, BIMCO 2018 participants reach
200 persons from various country.
