The Indonesian Electric Vehicle Industry Association (PERIKLINDO) held a special electric vehicle exhibition titled PERIKLINDO Electric Vehicle Show (PEVS) on 22-31 July 2022 at the Jakarta International Expo (JIEXPO), Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. PEVS is an exhibition event that serves as a forum for electric vehicle industry players, supporting industries to MSMEs and creative industries to prepare for the era of electrification. In the exhibition, which was the first to feature electric vehicles, not only electric cars and motorcycles could be enjoyed by visitors, but various categories of electric vehicles and supporting industries and their derivatives including the Universitas Indonesia (UI) Electric Bus were also exhibited.

With the election of Indonesia as the G20 Presidency in 2021-2022, and to support the Government in the implementation of the G20 Indonesia Presidency, the electric bus designed and produced by the nation’s children, which was born from the idea of a researcher from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia, has become one of the local electric vehicles that operate. The electric bus is a collaboration with PT Mobil Anak Bangsa (MAB) for almost three years in its manufacture, where PT MAB acts as a practitioner of the domestic industry. “With the domestic component level (TKDN) of buses being the highest in Indonesia for the large-sized bus class, which is 12 meters long and a maximum weight of 16 tons, the development of this technology will be introduced at the peak of the G20 Presidency in Bali,” the Vice Chancellor for Research and Development UI innovation, drg. Nurtami, Ph.D., Sp, OF(K).

On that occasion, drg. Nurtami said, “Universitas Indonesia Electric Bus Vehicle is currently still in the refinement stage. We continue to work on developing technology and making more buses in the future. Universitas Indonesia plans to add electric bus units with sizes of 10 meters and 12 meters.”

According to the Director of Innovation and Science Techno Park Universitas Indonesia, Ahmad Gamal, S.Ars., M.Sc., M.U.P., Ph.D., the UI Electric Bus design has used a high TKDN. This bus is designed as well as possible, starting from the drive system, braking, to the entire engine in it. The bus can accommodate a passenger weight of 13 tons with a maximum speed of 120 km/hour. However, the bus is not recommended to go at high speed because it can endanger other drivers.

The plan is that after the G20 Presidency, the Universitas Indonesia Electric Bus will operate at the Universitas Indonesia Depok Campus so that the Universitas Indonesia community and local residents can experience the environmentally friendly buses created by the nation’s children. The Universitas Indonesia Electric Bus was realized thanks to the Government’s support through the Education Fund Development Institute (LPDP) which invested Rp 12.65 billion for the development of the electric bus platform and Rp 5 billion for the development of the drive system (electric motor) by Universitas Indonesia.

During the manufacture of the Universitas Indonesia Electric Bus, the Head of the Research Center for Advanced Vehicle, Universitas Indonesia Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Ir. Feri Yusivar, M.Eng., representing the Electric Bus research team, said there were challenges in the process. One of them is when members of the Universitas Indonesia Electric Bus Research Team who are master and doctoral students have graduated from campus. “I had to find a replacement for a new team member and guide from the start. However, I am grateful that all these challenges can be handled properly,” said Dr. Ferry in interview session.

The Universitas Indonesia Electric Bus is also the first electric vehicle to be operated on the Jakarta Transportation (Transjakarta) route. On Friday (22/07), a cooperation agreement was signed between PT Mobil Anak Bangsa (MAB) as the manufacturer of the Universitas Indonesia Electric Bus and PT Transjakarta at JIEXPO, Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.

Also present at the signing were the Chief of Staff of the President of the Republic of Indonesia (RI), General TNI (Ret.) Dr. H. Moeldoko, S.I.P.; The Head of the DKI Jakarta Provincial Transportation Agency (Kadishub), Dr. Syafrin Liputo; President Commissioner of PT Transjakarta, Sudirman Said, S.E., M.B.A.; President Director of PT Transjakarta, M. Yana Aditya; President Director of PT MAB, Kelik Irwantono; and the Technical Director of PT MAB, Bambang Tri Soepandji. According to, Dr. Moeldoko, the innovation of the nation’s children is expected to be able to replace the role of public transportation that is not environmentally friendly. “Hopefully the existence of the UI Electric Bus can be realized evenly, especially on the outskirts of the capital city of Jakarta, where the pollution level is extraordinary due to the density of vehicles that are not environmentally friendly,” he said. ingkungan,” katanya.

The Universitas Indonesia Electric Bus will be piloted on the Transjakarta route for three months, from August 1 to the end of October 2022 on the Dukuh Atas 2–Ragunan route (Corridor 6). This trial is also the first local electric bus trial to be paved on the Transjakarta route. The electric bus will serve customers in the corridor or bus rapid transit (BRT) at 05.00–22.00 WIB with a ticket price of IDR 3,500. Kelik Irwantono welcomed this collaboration. According to Kelik, this step is a form of PT MAB and UI’s commitment to make Jakarta a greener and more shady city. The UI Electric Bus MD12E NF type was tested with a capacity of 48 passengers. With a battery power of 315.85 kWh, the UI Electric Bus is able to cover a distance of 250 km by only requiring a battery charge of 1.5–2 hours.

Referring to Presidential Regulation no. 55 of 2019 concerning the Acceleration of the Battery-Based Electric Motor Vehicle Program for Road transportation, and in line with the government’s goal of “Recover Together, Recover Stronger” at the G20 and government policies that encourage the automotive industry to move towards the era of electrification through the Low Roadmap. Carbon Emission Vehicle (LCEV), PEVS aims to contribute to increasing knowledge about BEV in the community. In addition, the exhibition is the best place for all domestic products related to Indonesian electric vehicles. PEVS 2022 is expected to support various programs launched by the government, one of which focuses on zero carbon emissions by 2060.
