At the beginning of 2022, Universitas Indonesia (UI) posted an achievement as the top university in Indonesia in terms of access to scientific publications. UI is ranked the first best university in Indonesia according to the January 2022 edition of Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.

Webometrics also released that UI is ranked 9th in Southeast Asia and 728th in the world. UI’s ranking has increased one rank from the July 2021 edition of the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities, when UI was in the top position in Indonesia, ranked 9th for Southeast Asia, and 729th in the world.

UI Rector, Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D., said that the achievement was achieved thanks to UI’s success in meeting the Webometrics assessment requirements based on three indicators, namely visibility or web contents impact (with a weight of 50%) that is the number of external networks (subnets) connected to the institution’s web page (normalized and then the maximum value is selected); transparency or openness (with a weight of 10%) that is the number of citations from the top 210 authors sourced from Google Scholar Profiles; and excellence or scholar (with a weight of 40%) that is the number of scientific publication articles among the top 10% of the most cited from 27 disciplines with sources from Scimago.

Webometrics is a website-based ranking system for universities around the world. Webometrics assesses web presence and visibility as an indicator of a university’s global performance. These indicators take into account the teaching commitment, research results, the perceived international prestige, relations with the community including the industrial and economic sectors of the university.

“Hopefully the good news that started UI’s record of achievements in 2022, where Webometrics placed UI as the first rank, will be followed by other achievements from global ranking institutions. UI’s target is not only at the Indonesian level, but also at the Southeast Asian level, even Asia,” said Amelita Lusia, Head of the UI Public Relations and Public Information Disclosure Bureau.

The Webometrics ranking is carried out by the Cybermetric Lab which is a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain, on more than 31,000 Higher Education Institutions in the world. The Webometrics ranking system aims to promote Web publications, support Open Access initiatives, support electronic access to scholarly publications, and other academic materials.
