UI IS LISTED IN THE TOP 10 BEST UNIVERSITIES IN SOUTHEAST ASIA BASED ON WEBOMETRICS’ JANUARY 2023 EDITION, UI STILL RANKS FIRST IN INDONESIA

On its 73rd anniversary, Universitas Indonesia (UI) received a “gift” of good news, which is being included in the list of the Top 10 Best Universities in Southeast Asia based on the January 2023 edition of The “Webometrics Ranking of World Universities”. This international ranking institution also released that UI is at the top ranking as the best higher education institution in Indonesia.

In the January 2023 edition, UI was ranked 10th in Southeast Asia and achieved an extraordinary improvement at the world level, namely shooting up 26 places from last year (level 577 in 2022). This achievement was gained thanks to UI’s success in meeting the Webometrics assessment requirements based on three indicators.

The first indicator is visibility or web contents impact (with a weight of 50%) which is the number of external networks (subnets) connected to institutional web pages (normalized and then the maximum value is chosen). Second, transparency or openness (with a weight of 10%) is the number of citations from the top 310 authors sourced from Google Scholar Profiles. Third, excellence or scholar (with a weight of 40%) is the number of scientific publication articles among the top 10% that are most cited from 27 disciplines with Scimago source.

If these three indicators are looked in more detail, on the Impact Rank indicator, UI’s ranking has climbed up 24 places, so this year UI is ranked 299th in the world. Then on the Openness Rank indicator in the January 2023 edition, UI is in the 686th position in the world, and on the Excellence Rank indicator, UI’s position has increased 13 ranks to 1114.

Rector of UI Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D. said that Universitas Indonesia continues to devote itself to becoming an innovative, independent, inclusive, dignified, and excellent higher education institution in Southeast Asia and the world. This is evident from the increasing recognition of UI at the international level. Prof. Ari expressed his highest appreciation to all lecturers, academic personnel, and students who have worked hard and collaborated to advance education at UI, through the Three Pillars of Higher Education.

Webometrics is a website-based ranking system for universities around the world. Webometrics conducts an assessment based on aspects of web presence and visibility as an indicator of a university’s global performance. These indicators take into account teaching commitment, research results, the perceived international prestige, and relations with the community including the industrial and economic sectors of the university.

The Webometrics ranking is carried out by the Cybermetric Lab, which is a research group belonging to Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain, for more than 31,000 Higher Education Institutions in the world. The Webometrics rating system aims to promote Web publications, support Open Access initiatives, and support electronic access to scientific publications and other academic materials.
