Present to give a public lecture at Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of Universitas Indonesia (FISIP UI), Deputy Governor of East Java Dr. H. Emil Elestianto Dardak, B.Bus., M.Sc. emphasized Indonesia’s need for tech-savvy human resources. Emil said, “Although Indonesia wants to develop fairly from Sabang to Marauke, Java is still an important locomotive to maintain the country’s competitiveness. Therefore, East Java was designed first to get Presidential Regulation Number 80 of 2019 on the Acceleration of Economic Development in Gresik – Bangkalan – Mojokerto – Surabaya – Sidoarjo – Lamongan, Bromo Area – Tengger – Semeru as well as Selingkar Wilis and Southern Cross Areas.”

He explained how the East Java Provincial Government relies on the creative economy as a motor of economic development. The creative economy portal or Porekraf is an innovation in facilitating creative economy actors in East Java to sustain community resilience, advance development, develop innovation, creativity and competitiveness, and make a real contribution to economic development and job creation in East Java.

Related to this, Emil argued that to advance the economy, well-educated and technologically literate young human resources are needed in all fields, including agriculture. He added the importance of technocratic leadership where governance is built on science and data. “To advance a region, the leaders must build a system, without looking for impressions; do not pursue the intention for winning elections, but focus on building the next generation; do not prioritize self-image, but build togetherness and encourage the community,” he said.

The public lecture delivered by Emil Dardak marked the start of the Even Semester of the 2022/2023 Academic Year, at FISIP UI. The (second) National Lecture with the theme “Interpreting Independence with the Acceleration of Synergistic, Inclusive, and Sustainable Regional Development” was held on Monday (29/08) attended by FISIP UI students from various study programs and classes.

This lecture was held as part of FISIP UI’s concern to foster a sense of nationality and increase interest in national studies at the university level. This activity was designed to explore the understanding and experience of national figures who have proven to lead the regional development process.

Dean of FISIP UI Prof. Dr. Semiarto Aji Purwanto

Related to the theme of the lecture, Dean of FISIP UI Prof. Dr. Semiarto Aji Purwanto said that just like driving a car, industry and technology are the gas for economic development to run faster. While socio-political-cultural considerations are the brakes to keep up with the pace of development in order to safely reach the destination.

He appreciated the East Java Provincial Government (Pemprov Jatim), which did not only pay attention to macroeconomic aspects with indicators of physical infrastructure development but also considered the background of regional diversity that has different characters.

Lecturer of Department of Sociology FISIP UI Dr. Lucia Ratih K, S.Sos, D.E.A, who was the moderator in the lecture, conveyed the noble task of social scientists is to work together with the community and leaders to create appropriate approaches for social transformation.

Social development policies require mapping of global, national, and local issues including social changes that are taking place in society. What is also important is the synergy between global, national and local actors, as well as cross-sectoral cooperation between academics, entrepreneurs, and local governments in social development.
