UI RANKS FIRST IN INDONESIA IN 3 OF 5 CATEGORIES OF BROAD SUBJECTS AND 13 NARROW SUBJECTS BASED ON QS SUBJECT RANKING 2023

Universitas Indonesia (UI), which last month celebrated its 73rd Anniversary, yesterday received a ‘gift’ in the form of good news from the release issued by The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023. The release announced that UI ranks at the top among other universities in Indonesia for the categories of Broad Subjects and Narrow Subjects.

In the release of the QS, UI collected the most scores in three of the five Broad Subject Areas. The five Broad Subject Areas are Social Sciences & Management, Engineering & Technology, Arts & Humanities, Life Sciences & Medicine, and Natural Sciences. UI excels in three of those broad subjects, which are Broad Subject Social Sciences & Management, Broad Subject Life Sciences & Medicine, and Broad Subject Arts & Humanities.

On Broad Subject Social Sciences & Management, UI ranks first on Narrow Subject in Accounting & Finance, Anthropology, Business and Management Studies, Communication and Media Studies, Development Studies, Law, Politics and International Studies, and Social Policy & Administration. Meanwhile, on Broad Subject Arts & Humanities, UI obtains the top score in Narrow Subject Modern Languages and Performing Arts. As on Broad Subject Life Sciences & Medicine, the highest score in Narrow Subject Medicine goes to UI.

On Broad Subject Engineering & Technology, UI is in second place in Indonesia. Even so, on Narrow Subject Computer Science & Information Systems and Engineering-Chemical, UI ranks first in Indonesia.

“This achievement in the release issued by QS WUR by Subject 2023 that recognizes UI as the best in Indonesia spurred UI to be even better in the future. Thank you for all the contributions made by UI academics. Together we are pursuing the target of the best and most distinguished higher education institution in ASEAN,” said UI Rector Prof. Ari Kuncoro S. E., M. A., Ph.D. He hopes that UI will be the best university in all Subject Areas.

In this QS ranking, there are five aspects that are assessed, which are Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Citations per Paper, H-Index, and International Research Network (IRN). Academic Reputation is obtained from a vote of more than 151,000 academics around the world that has been carried out between 2018 and 2022. Each informant has provided their opinion about universities based on their respective areas of expertise.

Furthermore, Employer Reputation is also required to assess the eligibility matrix based on the reputation of the employer. More than 99,000 votes from global employers have been counted between 2018 and 2022 to provide a wealth of information regarding recruitment.

In addition to assessments from academics and employers, Citations per Paper is also an assessment indicator to measure the average number of citations obtained per publication and to estimate the impact and quality of scientific papers produced by universities. In this ranking, the QS Team analyzed more than 16.4 million papers published between 2016–2020, which resulted in nearly 117.8 million citations in 2016–2021.

H-Index is also used to measure the stability of the impact and quality of published work by institutional scientists and scholars, while IRN is a measure of efficiency in establishing stable research collaborations in each of the five Broad Subject Areas. A total of 1,594 institutions was featured in the ranking comprising 54 Narrow Subjects within the five Broad Subject Areas and made more than 18,300 ranking entries.
